‘If you deny me, fie upon your law!
There is no force in the decrees of Venice.’
So says Shylock as he argues his case for a pound of the Merchant’s flesh, Antonio finding himself unable to return the Jew’s loan of three thousand ducats. Isn’t it interesting that Shylock’s chastisement of the law should have such immediate resonance for today’s audiences, at a time when we surely have as much right as he did to criticise the law and the upholding of the law on the part of our own law-makers(?) When asked, Richard Alston gives as one of the reasons for his continuing development as a choreographer the fact that audiences seem genuinely to enjoy his work. Had I known that in the final choruses the cast moralise a-rhythmically: ‘Everyone’s a little bit unsatisfied’ and ‘When you help others you can’t help helping yourself’ etc, I don’t think I could have been persuaded to see the show … However, encouraged that Avenue Q had won a covey of Tony award (more…)

Nothing is more powerful than the image of Christ in the Garden, asking for the cup of suffering to be taken from him while his disciples sleep. He goes on to be betrayed by Judas and is taken to the cross. We know the story.
