Oxford University researchers have estimated that the cost of dementia across 15 western European countries totalled £165 billion (€189 billion) in 2007. The first patient to receive gene therapy for an incurable type of blindness was treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford this week as part of a trial led by Oxford University. A large study to investigate causes of common cancers in India is being carried out through a collaboration between Oxford University in the UK and 12 leading cancer centres in India. The structure and function of a ‘molecular motor’ critical to the functioning of human organs and, when malfunctioning, implicated in cancer, kidney failure, and osteoporosis, has been revealed in unprecedented detail. An Oxford University research student has explored the alternative world in which premillennial Rapture movements such as Camping’s flourish in an attempt to shed light on why such claims are listened to be so many people.
