Four Oxford University academics and two senior University members have been recognised in the New Year Honours, announced on 31 December. Greater food availability and less exercise made the average man in the year 2000 over a stone heavier than he was in 1986, Oxford University research has shown. Hugs and kisses exchanged under the mistletoe are among the human interactions which can now be automatically recognised by computers from video footage, thanks to new research. Academics are teaching ancient Aramaic to classes with attendance figures which may not have been seen since Jesus was speaking the language 2,000 years ago. The public are being asked to help Oxford University astronomers find planets orbiting other stars which may have been ‘lost’ in the data from over 100,000 stars. Volunteers could even find 'Earth-like' alien worlds. If everyone in the UK ate their ‘five a day’ and kept to recommended levels of salt and unhealthy fats, 33,000 deaths could be prevented or delayed every year, an Oxford University study has found.
