Dr Jo An ambitious initiative to raise major research funding at Oxford University has defied the economic downturn by raising $100m to support groundbreaking research on key global problems - and the challenge has been met well within the year deadline originally set. A purpose-built visitor trailer is set to boost school visits to Food Animal Initiative (FAI) Farms at Wytham, Oxfordshire, as part of an outdoor classroom initiative co-sponsored by Oxford University. New observations of wild chimpanzees in Bossou, Guinea, have given insights into the behaviour of chimp mothers who carry the mummified remains of their dead infants with them. For the first time elephants have been found to produce an alarm call associated with the threat of bees, and have been shown to retreat when a recording of the call is played even when there are no bees around.
