Three Oxford University academics have been recognised in the New Year Honours, announced on 31 December. 2009 was another busy year for the University of Oxford, so we’ve taken this opportunity once again to reflect on some of the highlights. Here’s a roundup of a few of the stories we’ve covered on the news pages in the last 12 months. People with bipolar disorder are less likely to suffer a relapse if they are taking both lithium and sodium valproate rather than the drug valproate alone, an Oxford University study has shown. Professor Sir David Watson, currently Professor of Higher Education Management at the Institute of Education, University of London, has been elected as the next Principal of Green Templeton College. Monkey species will become ‘increasingly at risk of extinction’ because of global warming, according to new research published this week. With cheques due to be phased out in the UK by 2018 new security technology developed at Oxford University could offer a replacement, allowing people a secure way to pay in almost any situation.
